SULUT - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) appealed to residents living in the northern part of Talaud Islands Regency, North Sulawesi (Sulut) to stay away from coastal areas.

The Coordinator for Observation and Information at the Bitung Maritime Meteorological Station, Ricky D Aror, said that his party was anticipating a tsunami due to an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.7 Russia this Wednesday morning.

"From the results of the modeling by BMKG, the alert category or tsunami height reached 0.5 meters or 50 centimeters," he said in Manado, confiscated by Antara.

The tsunami height, which reaches 50 centimeters, has the potential to occur on the north coast of Talaud Islands Regency.

"The tsunami estimate arrives in Talaud Islands Regency at 14:52 WITA," he said.

Therefore, Ricky appealed to residents not to stand or do activities on the coast because the water level reaches half a meter, and there is no need for evacuation.

"If you look at the direction, the most affected by the northern coast of Talaud Islands Regency, including in Miangas Island. In the southern part, it is not affected," he said.

For fishermen who are currently at sea, he said, they are also not too affected, but must remain vigilant.
