JAKARTA - Israel's massive airstrike killed 12 people, including five Hezbollah fighters, in eastern Lebanon on Tuesday.

This attack Israel called a warning to the Iran-backed group not to try to rebuild their power.

The Israeli military said the airstrikes targeted training camps used by elite Hezbollah fighters and warehouses used to store weapons in the Bekaa Valley region, eastern Lebanon.

The airstrikes have been the deadliest in the region since the US-brokered ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel last November.

Bachir Khodr, governor of the Bekaa region, said the seven dead were Syrian citizens.

Israel dealt a crushing blow to Hezbollah in last year's conflict, killing its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, and other commanders, and destroying most of its weapons.

Israel's Defense Minister, Israel Katz, said the attack on Tuesday, July 15, sent a "clear message" to Hezbollah, accusing him of planning to rebuild the ability to attack Israel through elite Radwan forces.

"Israel will respond with maximum strength to every rebuilding effort," he said.

Katz explained the attack was also a message to the Lebanese government, which stated that they were responsible for enforcing the ceasefire agreement.

There has been no immediate public response from Hezbollah or the Lebanese government to Israel's latest attack.

The United States has submitted a proposal to the Lebanese government aimed at securing Hezbollah's ceasefire within four months in exchange for Israel to halt airstrikes and withdraw troops from positions they still control in southern Lebanon.

Under the provisions of a ceasefire brokered by the US and France, the Lebanese armed forces must confiscate "all illegal weapons", starting from the southern region of the Litani River" the closest zone to Israel.
