JAKARTA - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono said the revitalization of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) was no longer an option but a strategic need, given the current global uncertainty.

Foreign Minister Sugiono said Indonesia encourages strengthening ARF's institutional capacity and increasing practical cooperation, such as joint training, capacity building, to strengthening the early warning mechanism.

He emphasized that in the future ARFs need to adopt a comprehensive security approach that includes political, economic, environmental, digital and humanitarian dimensions.

"The revitalization of ARF is no longer an option, but rather a strategic need. We must ensure that this forum is more responsive, and is able to act collectively in dealing with complex threats," explained the Indonesian Foreign Minister, launching a statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Monday, July 14.

In the 32nd ARF Ministerial Meeting in Kuala Lumpur last week, Foreign Minister Sugiono said ARF revitalization was important to remain relevant in the face of a increasingly complex and uncertain global security landscape.

"The instability in the Middle East and attacks on nuclear facilities in Iran serve as a reminder that the regional crisis could have a global impact," Foreign Minister Sugiono said.

The Indonesian Foreign Minister said that in order to remain relevant in the midst of global uncertainty, ARF needed to carry out its initial mandate to encourage preventive diplomacy, because dialogue alone was not enough.

"The current challenge comes not only from military tensions, but also from economic vulnerability, environmental degradation, and cyber threats. ARF must evolve into a forum capable of responding to challenges concretely," he explained at a meeting held in Malaysia.

The 32nd ARF produces three outcome documents, namely "32nd ARF Chairman's Statement, Compendium of Best Practices on the Implementation of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code", and "Concept Note for the Compendium of Best Practices on Safeguarding and Enhancing Regional Cooperation on Ferry Safety Among ARF Participants".
