The Beding Phenomenon Is Estimated To Last Until September, The Air Temperature Can Reach 13 Degrees

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) estimates that the phenomenon of cold or mid-sized temperatures will continue until September 2025. This phenomenon is triggered by the dominance of dry and cold east winds during the dry season.

BMKG forecaster for the East Java Climatology Station, Linda Firotul, explained that it is generally possible to appear during the peak of the dry season, especially from July to September.

"This accusation is caused because it is currently in the dry season marked by the dominance of dry and cold easterly winds. This phenomenon usually occurs from July to September 2025," said Linda in Malang, East Java, Antara, Sunday, July 13.

The dry east wind accompanied by sunny skies also accelerated the release of heat from the earth's surface into the atmosphere at night, thus making the surface temperature feel colder than usual.

Linda added that the beginning of this year's dry season is expected to occur from April to June. However, in some areas there was rain due to atmospheric disturbances such as the Rossby, Kelvin, and Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) waves, which caused a shift in the dry season.

"In Malang Raya, the dry season is around May, the third to the first half of June," he said.

Although some areas are still raining, the presence of rain clouds can actually bring cold air masses to the surface and block sunlight, causing the air temperature to feel lower.

"The average temperature of the last 30 years (1991'2020) in Malang Raya ranges from 17 to 20 degrees Celsius," said Linda.

However, at the peak of the Beding phenomenon, which is expected to occur next August, the minimum temperature could decrease to 1315 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, during July 2025, the minimum temperature in the Greater Malang area was recorded to be between 1720 degrees Celsius, with a maximum temperature of 2628 degrees Celsius.

The Beding phenomenon can also trigger freezing or upas dew in mountainous areas, such as in Ranupane in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) area. This frozen dew can occur if the sky is clear, the wind is calm, and the humidity is high.
