JAKARTA - The United States military on Thursday said it would send 200 Marines to Florida to provide administrative and logistical support to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The Marines are the first batch of support from the US Northern Command for the mission of the immigration enforcement agency, the military.

"Members of the force participating in this mission will carry out tasks that are not law enforcement at all within ICE facilities," USNoRTHCOM said in a statement.

It said their role would be focused on administrative and logistical tasks. They are specifically prohibited from making direct contact with individuals who are in ICE detention or are involved in any aspect of the detention chain.

Last month, the Pentagon authorized mobilization of up to 700 Defense Department personnel to support ICE in Florida, Louisiana, and Texas.

President Donald Trump also deployed 700 Marines to Los Angeles in June to protect immigration agents during raids to illegally arrest migrants in the United States.
