JAKARTA - A military helicopter from an African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia crashed at an airport in the capital Mogadishu. The helicopter then caught fire.

News agency belonging to the SONNA government reported helicopters from the African Union's Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) carrying eight personnel on landing.

It has not been confirmed whether there were any casualties.

"We heard the explosion and saw smoke and flames on the helicopter," Farah Abdulle, who works at the airport, told Reuters on Wednesday, July 2.

"Smoke covers the entire helicopter," he said.

AUSSOM has more than 11,000 personnel in Somalia to help the country's military fight Islamist al Shabaab.

The al Qaeda affiliate has been battling for nearly two decades to overthrow the internationally recognized Somali government and build its own government based on a rigorous interpretation of sharia law.
