JAKARTA - United States President Donald Trump on Tuesday urged Palestinian militant group Hamas to approve what he called a "final proposal" for a 60-day ceasefire with Israel in the Gaza Strip to be delivered by mediation officials from Qatar and Egypt.

In a post on social media, President Trump said his representative held a "long and productive" meeting with Israeli officials about Gaza.

He did not name his representative, but US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to meet Ron Dermer, senior adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

President Trump said Israel had agreed to a 60-day ceasefire, "over time we will work closely with all parties to end the War."

The Republican politician said representatives of Qatar and Egypt would deliver this "final proposal" to Hamas.

"I hope, for the good of the Middle East, Hamas accepts this deal, as this deal won't get better it'll JUST get worse. Thank you for your attention to the matter!" he said, quoted by Reuters July 2.

President Trump told reporters earlier he hoped a ceasefire agreement for hostages could be reached next week between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza.

President Trump is scheduled to receive Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who flew to the United States Saturday and met him at the White House on Monday, quoted by The Times of Israel.

Uncle Sam's country is known to have proposed a ceasefire for 60 days and the release of half of the hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and the bodies of other Palestinians.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said earlier this week, Israel had agreed to a ceasefire and a 60-day hostage-taking deal proposed by the US, and handed over the responsibility to Hamas.

Hamas said it was willing to release the remaining hostages, paving a new path in Gaza based on any agreement to end the war, while Israel said the war could only end if Hamas was stripped and dissolved. Hamas refused to lay down his gun.

The latest conflict broke out in Gaza on October 7, 2023, when the Hamas-led Palestinian militant group attacked Israel's southern region, leaving about 1,200 people dead and 251 others in hostages according to Israeli calculations.

Israel responded by carrying out airstrikes, blockades, and ground operations in the Palestinian enclave.

The two sides agreed a temporary ceasefire and a exchange of hostages on January 19.

Israel again blockaded on March 2, before returning to military operations on March 18 as the ceasefire ended.

Yesterday, medical sources in Gaza confirmed that the death toll of Palestinians in the enclave since the conflict broke out on October 7, 2023 has reached 56,647 people, the majority of children and women, while injured victims reached 134,105 people, quoted from WAFA.
