JAKARTA - Foreign Minister Sugiono said the current condition of the Middle East was at a crisis point following Israel being attacked by a houthi missile by Yemen, although the war with Iran eased.

The Foreign Minister hopes that the Middle East's geopolitical conflict will not further erode and affect the Indo-Pacific region.

"Once again, we are not closing our eyes, and if this situation is not managed properly, then geopolitical rivalry will increase and open up space for open conflicts in various parts of the world, including in the Indo Pacific region, the temperature will increase," said Sugiono in a working meeting with Commission I DPR, Monday, June 30.

"Of course something we both don't want," he continued.

Sugiono also ensured that efforts to protect and repatriate Indonesian citizens (WNI) in conflict-prone areas were carried out. He revealed that on Sunday, June 15, when the attack was launched on Iran, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had ordered to increase the status of the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran from alert II to standby I.

"And ask all Indonesian citizens in Iran and be in Israeli territory to report themselves and coordinate so that evaluation steps can be taken," he said.

Of the 386 Indonesian citizens in Iran, 97 people were successfully evacuated via Azerbaijan.

While the rest, according to Sugiono, still chose to stay in the area and have not expressed his willingness to move.

"However, we also continue to monitor this situation and hopefully with this ceasefire and peace their condition is in a good situation," said Foreign Minister Sugiono.

Sugiono explained, in parallel the Indonesian Embassy in Amman also facilitated the evacuation of 26 Indonesian citizens from the Tel Aviv area and then Jerusalem and Arava. As well as evacuation plans for citizens in these areas that will continue.

"We have also instructed all representative offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Middle East region to prepare contingency steps in order to ensure the protection of Indonesian citizens in their respective regions," he explained.

"Then we have also formed a task force called the crisis response team and carried out a table top exercise if at any time the worst development of the situation forces us to evacuate citizens in these countries," continued Sugiono.
