"The destruction aims to be economic-related, both those affected by local mango farmers who cannot compete in price with imported mangoes," said Head of the Law Enforcement Team of the North Sumatra Fish and Plant Quarantine Center, Andry Pandu Latansa in Medan, Thursday, June 26, as reported by ANTARA.
The destruction was also carried out to avoid the impact of the disease because the mango contained fruit fly larvae and fungal flies.
According to him, if the fruit fly larvae and fungal flies carried by the mango are feared to contaminate fruits in the North Sumatra region, especially in the Medan market.
"There is no official or legal destroyed fruit, we are also working with other institutions by forming a task force for anti-smuggling to take action," he said.
Andry said the estimated value of illegal goods was IDR 730 million with a potential tax shortage of IDR 316 million.
The destruction was the result of the prosecution of a joint team consisting of a task force from the TNI, North Sumatra Customs, North Sumatra Police, North Sumatra Center for Animal Quarantine and North Sumatra Plants.
