YOGYAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) appealed to the public to be aware of the potential for high waves that are expected to occur in the southern waters of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) until June 12, 2025 due to the influence of 92W cyclonic seeds in the eastern waters of the Philippines.

Head of Yogyakarta Meteorological Station Warjono said the presence of these cyclone seeds caused the dominance of the east wind pattern which also affected the condition of the southern waters of Java, including the DIY area.

"It was observed that 92W cyclone seeds were observed in the eastern waters of the Philippines. The east wind pattern dominated weather patterns in most areas of Java, including the DIY region, thus affecting the wave height in the next few days," said Warjono in a statement in Yogyakarta, Antara, Monday, June 9.

Based on weather forecasts, sea waves in the southern waters of DIY, covering the waters of Gunungkidul, Bantul, and Kulon Progo Regencies, he said, have the potential to reach a height of between 2.5 and 4.0 meters.

Therefore, he appealed to the public, especially fishermen, ship operators, and tourists who are active in coastal areas to increase vigilance.

Warjono said fishing boats were starting to risk if the wind speed reached 15 knots and the wave height exceeded 1.25 meters.

Likewise, barges have the potential to be affected if the waves are 1.5 meters with 16 knots of wind, and ferries at 2.5 meters of waves with 21 knots of wind.

In addition to the influence of 92W cyclonic seeds, according to Warjono, atmospheric dynamics conditions are also influenced by the cyclonic circulation pattern in southwest Sumatra which causes the formation of convergence areas and wind bends.

The combination caused the wind in Java, including DIY, to blow dominantly from east to southeast and also support the increase in wave height in the southern sea.

He added that the sea surface temperature in the Java Sea and the Indian Ocean south of Java is currently also relatively warm, between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius, with anomalies of up to 2.5 degrees Celsius.

"This condition supports increasing the supply of water vapor into the atmosphere and helps strengthen the formation of rain clouds," he said.
