JAKARTA - Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Minister (P2MI) Abdul Kadir Karding briefed 196 Indonesian illegal migrant workers who were deported from Malaysia through Dumai Port, Riau, on Saturday, May 31.

Hundreds of Indonesian citizens were deported by Malaysian authorities for leaving for work non-procedurally, exceeding the stay permit period (overstay), getting sick, causing legal problems.

During his visit accompanied by Riau Governor Abdul Wahid, Minister Karding reminded the importance of going to work abroad procedurally or legally.

"Why did this incident happen to these brothers and sisters, it was because the brothers and sisters at that time did not work through existing procedures," said Minister Karding to the illegal migrant workers in a written statement, confiscated by Antara.

He explained that the procedure for leaving for work abroad has now been done procedurally. Thus, prospective Indonesian migrant workers can quickly go abroad safely in order to avoid shortcuts through brokers that can endanger themselves.

"For example, it's true like this, there is PT, there is a work contract, there is a work visa, there is permission from parents or guardians," said Minister Karding.

He also appealed to prospective migrant workers not to easily believe the information circulating on social media about job vacancies abroad with the lure of a large salary.

Karding asked Indonesians who are interested in working abroad to access social media or the official website of the Ministry of P2MI which facilitates job vacancies abroad legally.

"For procedures, please visit Indonesian migrant worker service offices in BP3MI districts or offices at the regional level or directly call the head office or to the existing Manpower Office," he said.

Furthermore, Karding asked migrant workers who were deported to help the government socialize information to their closest family or friends to go to work abroad legally to be safe and protected.

"Please, his family in the village, who want to go to work abroad, are notified, must go through procedural procedures. Help the government so that it doesn't happen with you," he appealed.

Meanwhile, Riau Governor Abdul Wahid expressed his hope that prospective migrant workers who will go abroad through Riau can ensure their legality.

"We hope that Riau is the gateway for all activities abroad, especially to Malaysia," said Abdul Wahid.

He also revealed that many non-procedural Indonesian migrant workers admitted that they did not know the requirements and processing of documents to work abroad.

"On average, in Riau there are also many non-procedural migrant workers. Why? Because they are closer from here. So maybe these friends (found illegal) because there do not know how to manage the workforce mechanism so that it is not obtained procedurally," said Abdul Wahid.
