JAKARTA - Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot said only the word genocide could describe what is happening in Gaza today.

"As a foreign minister, it is not my authority to make such a statement. However, my personal opinion states that this is very similar to genocide. I don't know what else will happen before that word can be used," said Prevot in an interview with Humo magazine reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Wednesday, May 28.

The prevot expressed his anger by saying: "I am very angry. I have said since April that the blockade of aid is a shame. Making people starving on purpose is a crime," he replied when asked about the terrible picture of Gaza from an Israeli attack.

He also underlined that the governments of Belgium and Europe should increase diplomatic pressure on Israel, such as imposing sanctions.

"I support sanctions against military and political leaders on both sides and against Jewish settlers who forcibly expel Palestinians from their homes in the West Bank. The Belgian government is no longer enough to condemn this situation; actions are needed to get Israel moving," he said.

However, Prevot realized that not all coalitions had the same opinion.

"And the condition for European sanctions is that all member states give their approval, including countries such as Germany, Italy and Hungary," he added.

The prevot also hopes that the Trump administration will change its support for Israel.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached an unprecedented level, with most residents suffering from high food insecurity.
