Prabowo Proposes BIMP-EAGA To Become A Center For Food And Energy Security In ASEAN

President Prabowo Subianto addressed the 16th BIMP-EAGA Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Tuesday (27/5/2025), ANTARA/HO-BPMI Presidential Secretariat.

JAKARTA - President Prabowo Subianto proposed that Indonesia, the Philippines, Brunei Darussalam, and Malaysia, which are members of the BIMP-EAGA sub-regional cooperation, become the center of food security and energy security in the ASEAN region.

President Prabowo emphasized that food security and energy security are important for independence and sovereignty in the region.

"For that, I propose that we also concentrate on food and energy security. I would like to invite BIMP-EAGA to work together to make our sub-regions a regional food production center," said President Prabowo in his speech during the BIMP-EAGA 16th Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Tuesday, May 27, confiscated by Antara.

Therefore, the President also considered that there was a need to strengthen governance and the mechanism for implementing the points of the BIMP-EAGA agreement, then the President also emphasized immediately strengthening economic integration between countries.

"Including increasing the involvement of the private sector and accelerating infrastructure projects, all of this can be achieved in the near future," said the President.

The President believes that the partnership between Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia and the Philippines is beneficial not only for the people of each country, but also for forces in the region.

In closing his speech, the President again emphasized that the BIMP-EAGA 16th Summit could strengthen joint commitment to support and realize the ASEAN 2045 Community Vision agreed by 10 ASEAN member countries in Kuala Lumpur, Monday (26/5).

"We are fully committed and ready to make it happen," said President Prabowo.

The 16th BIMP-EAGA Summit is a high-level meeting that is routinely held annually by Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Generally, the meeting was held on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit.

President Prabowo attended the 46th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur along with other high-level meetings, namely the ASEAN Summit with bay countries (GCC), and the ASEAN Summit with GCC and China.

The nature of the ASEAN 46th Summit series, Monday, President Prabowo spoke in a panel session along with nine other member states leaders, including Malaysian Prime Minister (PM) Anwar Ibrahim as the host and Chair of ASEAN this year.

Then, the leaders of member states on Monday also signed the 2045 ASEAN Declaration: Our Shared Future, and the event was closed with a dinner by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center on Monday evening local time.

The President returned to his homeland from the Subang TUDM Air Base, Selangor, on Tuesday afternoon local time, and is scheduled to land at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base, Jakarta, in the afternoon.
