JAKARTA - United States (US) Foreign Minister Marco Rubio admitted that President Donald Trump wanted to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin immediately.
In an interview with CBS News quoted via Tass, Sunday, May 18, Rubio encouraged the US and Russia to fully coordinate for this meeting to be realized.
"President [Donald Trump] has made the offer publicly. The mechanism for holding such a meeting would require a bit of hard work. So I can't say that it's being planned as we talk, in terms of choosing locations and dates, but the President wants to do so. He wants to do it as soon as possible. I think the Russian side has also expressed his willingness to do it. So now, it's just a matter of bringing everyone together and finding out where and when the meeting will happen and about what it is," he said.
Rubio is optimistic that the deadlocks that have been going on regarding Ukraine will melt when Trump and Putin meet in person.
"In the end, one of the things that can help break this deadlock, perhaps, the only thing that can be done, is the direct conversation between President Trump and Vladimir Putin, and he has publicly expressed his desire and belief that it needs to happen, and hopefully that will materialize soon," Rubio said.
