JAKARTA - Iranian and European officials on Friday held discussions in Istanbul, Turkey, regarding the status of Iran's nuclear program and measures to prevent further escalation.
Following a meeting of deputy foreign ministers from Iran, Britain, France and Germany at the Iranian Consulate General in the Turkish metropolitan city of Istanbul, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi confirmed discussions centered around Iranian-US negotiations.
"We exchanged views and discussed the latest developments regarding indirect nuclear negotiations and the lifting of sanctions," Gharibabadi said in a statement quoted by ANTARA from Anadolu, Friday, May 16.
There has been no response from Europe regarding the meeting.
Prior to the meeting between Iran and E3 (three major European countries, namely Britain, Germany and France) in Rome, Italy, on May 2, it was canceled after Iran-US direct nuclear negotiations were postponed.
Iran remains concerned that European parties in the 2015 nuclear deal could trigger the so-called "mechanismsnapback," meaning it would reimpose UN sanctions on Iran that had been lifted under the agreement.

This mechanism ends on October 18. If no diplomatic solutions have been reached before that, European countries are expected to consider implementing the clause.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned in an editorial opinion on May 11 in France's Le Point daily abuse of the feedback mechanism could increase tensions permanently and "not only mark the end of Europe's role in the agreement, but also a dangerous turning point."
He also called on European countries to hold further nuclear dialogue with Iran.
