JAKARTA - Japan's Ministry of Defense was urged to establish an office tasked with dealing with unidentified flying objects or UFOs in a meeting with a group of cross-party lawmakers on Friday.
The group, chaired by former Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, submitted the proposal to the current defense minister.
The proposal describes UFO sightings, which are now officially called UAP or an unknown anomalous phenomenon, as a realistic and serious national security issue.
"Our country has lagged behind in responding to UAP. Meanwhile, securing safety in territorial airspace and waters is an urgent issue," the group said, calling for the formation of a body similar to the United States Domain Anomaly Resolution Office.
According to ANTARA from Kyodo, Friday, May 16, one of the Pentagon's divisions was founded in 2022 to lead US efforts to deal with UAP through a rigorous scientific framework and a data-based approach.

The MPs also suggested that the new office periodically report the progress of UAP investigations to parliament and disclose information to the public, in addition to conducting scientific analysis of the data collected and identifying potential threats.
Japanese Defense Minister General Nakaati said, "We will try to meet the hopes" of the group formed last year.
