JAKARTA - A young Mexican influencer who is known for his video about beauty and makeup, was shot dead during a live broadcast on TikTok social media.
The incident shocked the country because it faced a high level of gender-based violence.
Valeria Marquez, 23, was murdered on Tuesday (13/5) at her beauty salon where she worked in Zapopan City by a man who entered and shot her, state prosecutor Jalisco said in a statement released late Tuesday, without naming the suspect, quoted by Reuters May 15.
A few seconds before the incident, Marquez was seen in his TikTok live broadcast sitting on a table holding a toy doll. He sounded saying, "they're coming," before a background voice asked, "Hey, Vale?"
"Yes," Marquez replied, just before turning off the sound on the live broadcast.
Moments later, he was shot dead. Someone seemed to pick up his phone, with their face appearing briefly on live broadcasts before the video ended.
Marquez, who has nearly 200,000 followers on Instagram and TikTok, previously said on a live broadcast that someone came to the salon when he wasn't there with "expensive prizes" to give him. Marquez, who seemed worried, said he had no plans to wait for the person back.
The statement said the incident was being investigated according to protocols for the murder of a woman or daughter for gender reasons.
