JAKARTA - The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, accepted the handover of the chairmanship of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) or the Parliamentary Union forum for countries that are members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OKI).
Thus, Puan officially represents Indonesia as the 19th PUIC President for this year.
The chairmanship of the 18th PUIC was previously held by the State Parliament of the Republic of Ivory Coast. The submission of the PUIC presidency was carried out in the Transition Ceremony of Presidency session which was held at the DPR building, Senayan, Jakarta, Wednesday, May 14.
Puan was named 19th PUIC President after symbolically handing over the trial hammer from President Parliament of Cote D'Ivoire or Chair of the National Republic Council of Ivory Coast, Adama Bictogo.
The granting of this trial hammer also marks the official DPR as the Chair of the PUIC with Puan as the holder of the presidency.
"I would like to thank all PUIC members for the trust in leading PUIC," said Puan in her speech.
This is truly an honor for our country and people in carrying out their mandate. God willing, Indonesia will carry out its mandate as well as possible in bringing PUIC in the midst of global uncertainty," continued Puan.
The transitional leadership event for the OKI Parliamentary Forum was attended by PUIC Secretary General Mouhamed Khouraicho Niass and PUIC Deputy Secretary General Ali Asghad Mohammad Sonjani.
On this occasion, Puan also gave high appreciation for the leadership of the Chairperson of the National Republic Council of Ivory Coast, Adama Bictogo, for the past year as the 18th PUIC President. He said that Indonesia really appreciates the contribution of Ivory Coast in facilitating discussion and cooperation between PUIC member countries.
According to Puan, Ivory Coast showed strong leadership and visionary in the PUIC by holding a conference in Abidjan which succeeded in uniting various delegates from member countries.
"Indonesia hopes to continue this good cooperation, especially in an effort to strengthen the parliament of OIC countries in building world civilization and realizing global peace," said Puan.
Puan stated that Indonesia is committed to fighting for a number of global issues that have an impact on OIC member countries, including support for the Palestinian independence struggle.
"The resolution of the Palestinian conflict must be pursued through a fair solution and strengthen cooperation between Islamic countries," said Puan.
"Indonesia will continue to encourage efforts that emphasize constructive dialogue between stakeholders and advocate for the formation of a sovereign Palestinian state with internationally recognized borders," he added.

Puan reiterated Indonesia's commitment and support for Palestine. This includes encouraging the strengthening of humanitarian aid for victims of conflicts in Gaza and its surroundings.
Indonesia also encourages the international community to increase humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people, in order to reduce the burden of suffering due to the ongoing conflict, said Puan.
Puan then invited OIC member countries to be able to affirm their political position and legitimacy on the international stage. According to Puan, the 19th PUIC Conference in which the DPR is the host, must be used as a forum to strengthen diplomacy, increase cross-border collaboration in the fields of economy, social and culture.
"As well as forming a strategic alliance that is able to create a basis for institutional reform and stronger governance in each OIC country," he exclaimed.
Puan hopes that the PUIC Conference held at the DPR building will not only be a place of discussion, but also as a mechanism to achieve joint consensus and policies that support stability and progress in the Islamic world and globally.
"I ask for support from all PUIC member countries so that Indonesia can bring PUIC to become an organization with more advanced governance and institutions in the future," said Puan.
"We also invite all member states to continue to strengthen solidarity and integrity of the ummah and expand real cooperation, for the sake of common benefit and a peaceful future for all mankind," he continued.
After his inauguration as 19th PUIC President, Puan then chaired the 19th Session of PUIC session. This session is the core event of the PUIC conference where in this session, the chairmen of parliament or deputy chairmen of the OKI state parliament who attend will give a speech.
Tonight, Puan will also lead the inauguration of the opening of the 19th PUIC Conference. President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to attend to participate in the opening of the OKI Parliamentary Union forum.
Although the official opening ceremony will only be held, the 19th PUIC series of activities have started since Monday, May 12, with a number of important meetings.
