JAKARTA - North Korea launched several short-range ballistic missiles towards the East Sea on Thursday, the South Korean military said, the country's first ballistic missile test since March.

The South Korean military's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said it detected the launch, which likely involved several short-range ballistic missiles, from North Korea's eastern coastal city, Wonsan, at around 8:10 a.m. local time.

"Our military has stepped up surveillance of follow-up launches and maintained a full alert stance while sharing information about North Korea's ballistic missiles with the United States and Japan," the JCS said in a notification to reporters.

Thursday's launch comes about two months after North Korea launched several ballistic missiles, suspected of being short-range missiles, on March 10, when South Korea and the US launched a joint spring military exercise.

The launch also marks North Korea's second ballistic missile launch since US President Donald Trump returned to the White House in January.

North Korea has refrained from major provocations this year following President Trump's return and amid its increasingly close military cooperation with Russia.

North Korea, which has a track record of conducting weapons tests in response to joint exercises by Seoul and Washington, has opted to remove more rhetoric this year than major provocations, such as those involving long-range ballistic missiles, experts say.
