JAKARTA - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) declared an emergency response status for floods and landslides in Jayawijaya Regency, Papua Mountains, in accordance with disaster procedures.

Director of Facilitation for Handling BNPB Victims and Refugees, Nelwan Harahap, in Wamena on Saturday, May 3, 2025, said the emergency response status set by the Jayawijaya Regency Government (Pemkab) was in accordance with the current conditions.

"We think it is fitting, fast, and appropriate for emergency response status. This is an entry point to mobilize all existing resources, both national and regional, to jointly tackle floods and landslides in Jayawijaya," he said.

According to him, with emergency response situations, resources, including the TNI-Polri, state civil servants (ASN), and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the humanitarian sector, they can directly handle flood and landslide victims.

"We also appreciate the TNI-Polri, ASN, and humanitarian NGOs who have come down to provide support for the basic needs of the people of Jayawijaya who were affected by floods and landslides," he said.

He explained that the relative emergency response time, where up to 33 districts in Jayawijaya Regency were completely safe and did not experience floods and landslides.

"If the threat of floods and landslides has ended and all people have been handled, immediately revoke the emergency response status so that they can continue their handling of rehabilitation and reconstruction after floods and landslides," he said.

He added that no matter how small the impact it had, it would have an impact on meeting basic needs after floods and landslides in Jayawijaya Regency.

"We make sure that the harvest will fail. Those who start planting and cannot plant this will become social problems," he said.

He further assessed that after the affected communities began planting, in the next six months they would harvest.

"This is our concern (BNPB) so that the emergency response status is immediately revoked when it ends so that it can be continued to the rehabilitation and reconstruction stage," he said.

He stated that the handling after the disaster was much more important and important to help people affected by floods and landslides in Jayawijaya Regency.

"This concerns the survival of the people, both those affected and those who depend on agricultural products, which are currently crop failure due to flooding," he said.
