The Directorate of Narcotics and Illegal Drugs of the Riau Regional Police denied the wrong arrest of two residents from Pamekasan, Madura, who were previously arrested in an investigation into a 13 kilogram methamphetamine case.
D allegedly ordered Z to pick up H at the Surabaya Terminal and take him to Madura, on the orders of the owner of the illegal goods from Malaysia.
"Z received a transfer of Rp1 million from the owner of the goods. Based on Z's statement, the money consisted of Rp700 thousand for travel costs and Rp300 thousand for H's meal," said Kombes Putu in a statement quoted by ANTARA, Friday, May 2.
Although there was not enough evidence to determine D and Z as suspects, both were said to have been involved in a series of criminal events. They also admitted that they did not know that H was carrying methamphetamine when they were picked up.
"After an in-depth examination, both of them were sent home because no evidence of direct involvement had been fulfilled. However, we are still investigating their role in this incident," he added.
Putu emphasized that the police's actions were not a form of wrongful arrest, but part of a legal procedure to uncover cross-provincial narcotics networks.
"This is not confinement or wrongful arrest. An intensive examination is carried out to make light of a criminal act. This procedure is legal according to law and carried out for the sake of investigation," he said.
According to Putu, the drug trafficking network is now using various modes to avoid tracking. This includes parties who do not know the contents of the goods they carry.
"This network deliberately cuts off the flow of communication so as not to lead to the main city. This is what we are dismantling. The Riau Police are committed to taking firm action, not only couriers, but also intellectual actors behind drug trafficking. The investigation is still ongoing and we will continue to investigate it thoroughly," he said.
