JAKARTA - Japan is ready to provide US$6 million (around 100 billion rupiah) in the form of emergency grant assistance for the victims of the devastating earthquake in Myanmar.

Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, April 2, said the assistance would be provided through international organizations, given the "very large need for humanity" expected to occur in Myanmar.

The death toll has reached more than 2,700 people since an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 rocked Myanmar on Friday (28/3).

Tokyo has sent a medical team to Myanmar as well as emergency aid items such as sanitation equipment, water and water purifiers through the government-backed Japan International Cooperation Agency and the United Nations, according to the ministry.

Two Japanese nationals are confirmed injured in Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city close to the epicenter of the earthquake, and another in Bangkok, the capital of neighboring Thailand which was also affected by the disaster.

One Japanese citizen is still unknown in Mandalay, the Japanese government said.

"The Japanese government will stand with the Myanmar people and provide humanitarian assistance that can directly benefit them," said chief cabinet secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi.
