JAKARTA - French President Emmanuel Macron and Danish King Frederik X called on Europe to be "more independent" in the French-Denmark economic forum.
"Over the past few years, we believe -- and I can say that Denmark and France are united in this-- that sovereignty, strategic autonomy, and independence are very important," Macron said as quoted by ANTARA from Anadolu, Wednesday, April 2.
According to him, Europe is experiencing "a consequence of its immediate dependence."
Macron stressed that although the United States (US) has been a formidable ally for decades, there is no guarantee that US priorities will be in line with Europe's priorities in the years to come.
Macron and King Frederik X call for more investment and development in healthcare, defense and energy in Europe.
"In all major fields, we must develop the European program together, spend together, and create a strong market for the sake of Europe's defense. This is a goal that we must set for ourselves," Macron said.
He said Europe should convey an agenda that combines close competitiveness, defense, and security.
"Complexity is the destroyer of competitiveness and our ability to convey a clear and efficient agenda," he said, adding that innovation in the European Union could move slower than the US.
Macron also expressed confidence in the French-Denmark partnership.
"We share the same values, and when these values face challenges, even by some of our closest allies in history, these values regain strength and meaning," he said.
King Frederik X said the need for strategic partnerships was at "the highest point in history" as countries faced "a new global context, uncertain times," and "an emerging security threat."
He stressed Europe must "strengthen interoperability," invest in cybersecurity, and collaborate to protect shared values.
Interoperability is the ability of systems, software, or hardware to communicate with each other, exchange data, and use information effectively, regardless of geographical, political, or organizational boundaries.
"I believe that we can further strengthen bilateral relations and build a strong Europe in the future," said King Frederik X.
