JAKARTA - Romanian President Klaus Iohannis announced his resignation after receiving pressure from opposition groups who wanted him to step down from the presidency.
"In order to save Romania and Romanians from this unnecessary crisis and negative development, I resign from office as President of Romania," Iohannis said in a speech broadcast on local television.
He will officially leave office on Wednesday.
The decision was taken after the opposition group filed impeachment against him in parliament.
"(The impeachment) is a wasteful step because in the next few months I will indeed leave this position. It is also a baseless step because I have never violated the Constitution. Apart from that, this is a detrimental act," said Iohannis (65) in his speech reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Monday, February 10.
In December, the Romanian Constitutional Court canceled the second round of presidential elections originally scheduled to take place on December 8.
Right-wing figure Calin Georgescu won the first round on November 24, but his victory sparked allegations of Russian interference.
This finally led to the Constitutional Court canceling the election.
The two-round election is now rescheduled for May 4, with the second round on May 18 if no candidate gets more than 50 percent of the vote.
Iohanis' second and final term has actually ended on December 21, but he remains in office until his successor is elected.
