JAKARTA - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has dispatched a team to investigate the cause of mass fish deaths which are estimated at 100 tons in Jatiluhur Reservoir, Sukasari District, Purwakarta Regency, West Java.

"KKP through the Directorate General of Fisheries Budi Daya has dispatched a team to check the cause of the mass death of fish in the Jatiluhur Reservoir," said Director General of Fisheries Budi Daya KKP Tb Haeru Rahayu as reported by ANTARA, Monday, February 10.

The KKP recorded a total mass fish death in the Jatiluhur Reservoir as much as 100 tons or Rp. 2.2 billion. The majority of fish that experienced mass deaths were goldfish.

Meanwhile, the Director of Freshwater Fish at the Directorate General of Fisheries, Budi Daya KKP, Ujang Komarudin, said that the current assumption of the price of goldfish is IDR 22 thousand per kilogram.

He mentioned the location of the mass fish deaths, namely in Pasir Kole Village, Kutamanah Village, Sukasari District and Ciflying Village, Panyindangan Village, Sukatani District. The incident then became widespread as news on Friday (7/2).

Ujang said the majority of the cultivators were aware of extreme weather and the dangers of upwelling could cause mass death of farmed fish.

"However, many of them are still holding back their cultivation fish harvest so that it can reach a larger size," said Ujang.

Ujang went directly together with the Sukabumi Air Tawar Fisheries Center Team (BBPBAT) and the Purwakarta Regency Livestock and Fisheries Service to see the incident.

Ujang appealed to cultivators to carry out a total harvest or initial harvest to avoid the death of mass fish. Especially for types of goldfish that depend heavily on the stability of the dissolved oxygen supply (O2).

The KKP also recommends temporarily not carrying out cultivation activities in the Jatiluhur Reservoir until the weather returns to normal and the water can restore its condition stably.

"Immediately remove dead fish from the waters and immediately bury them so that the reservoir waters return to normal and not polluted," said Ujang.

Previously, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono invited cultivators to prioritize sustainability in every activity.

Trenggono emphasized the importance of environmentally friendly cultivation activities by prioritizing ecological sustainability.
