JAKARTA - Air pollution in urban areas, especially in the Jabodetabek area, has become a serious threat that affects public health and the quality of the environment. Realizing this urgency, the government recently released the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia Number 14 of 2024 concerning the Implementation of Administrative Supervision and Sanctions for the Environment.

This rule is the basis for the implementation of supervision and provision of administrative sanctions in the environmental sector, including administrative fines regulated in Article 82C paragraph (1) of Law Number 6 of 2023 concerning Job Creation in the Implementation of Supervision and Administrative Sanctions for the Environment.

Air Spokesperson, Novita Natalia, welcomed the efforts made by the government through the regulation. In the 100th day of the Prabowo - Gibran administration, Novita encouraged the government through the Ministry of Environment (KLH) to be proactive in implementing law enforcement for the prevention of air pollution in Jabodetabek.

"This step is expected to be a tool for law enforcement against parties who are negligent to cause environmental pollution, such as surpassing the ambient air quality standard," said Novita, in an official statement in Jakarta, quoted Tuesday, January 28.

Novita revealed that her party has always been proactive in advocating policies regarding the handling of air pollution. Previously, during an audience with the Deputy Minister of the Environment, Diaz Hendropriyono, at the end of last year, his party had provided a number of inputs to the government as an effort to encourage community involvement in controlling air pollution.

"The things that are driven by Air Talks to the government are data transparency, data integration, pollution inventory by the source application method, early warning to the public, and law enforcement," he added.

Meanwhile, Edward Nixon Pakpahan, Director of Protection and Management of the KLH Air Quality, emphasized that his party is committed to working proactively in dealing with air pollution problems.

"Our work is clear from the Minister's direction: hard work. We must focus on ensuring that no more air pollution has a major impact, both economically and socially, as happened in Jabodetabek last year," he said.

Nixon explained that strategic steps taken by the ministry were in the form of direct visits and assistance to local governments (Pemda) to encourage the implementation of regional regulations (Perda) related to air pollution control, including supervision and industrial sanctions that violate emission limits. Currently, KLH prioritizes intensive work in the Jabodetabek area and buffers such as Bogor Regency, Karawang, and Serang.

"We have visited several areas, and in the future we will complete visits to 14 regencies/cities until mid-February. Hopefully, the local government can report regular prevention and enforcement measures to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry," he concluded.
