2 Climbers Missing On Mount Karianga Maluku Found Hypothermia, Evacuated Basarnas

MALUKU - The Search and Rescue Office (Basarnas) stated that two climbers of Mount Karianga in North Halmahera, Maluku, who had been lost, were found safe.

Head of the Ternate SAR Office, Fathur Rahman, said the two climbers from Popilo Village, Tobelo City named Rahman (18) and Arkam (19) were found on the cliffs on January 13, 2025 at 09.00 WIT.

According to him, when they found the two victims, they were found to have symptoms of hypothermia.

The team then carried out the evacuation process. At 11.00 WIT, the evacuation process went smoothly, the two victims were successfully evacuated from the cliff lip and taken to the first bivak location for the first medical treatment.

At 16.30 WIT, the Joint SAR Team managed to evacuate the victim to Kokota Jaya Village. Then the victim was handed over to the family in a safe condition. With the success of finding the two victims, the SAR Ops was closed.

It is known that the identities of the two victims, namely Rahman (18 years) and Arkam (19 years) who were found in the joint SAR operation, were immediately taken to their respective homes.

As is known, the joint SAR team deployed personnel to search for two residents of North Halmahera who were reported missing while climbing Mount Karianga since January 11, 2025.

The chronology of the disappearance of the two victims began when four residents of Popilo Village, North Tobelo District climbed Mount Karianga Tobelo, but on the night journey arrived, so the four of them made tents to camp to continue their journey the next day.

The next day, only two climbers continued their journey to the top of Mount Karianga due to foggy weather conditions and two of them waited in the tent.

However, because the two victims had not returned, two of his colleagues who were currently camping and waiting were forced to return to Popilo Village to inform their families and then report this incident to the Tobelo Basarnas.

"After the report was received, at 20.10 Wit, the team headed to the victim's residence in Popilo Village to coordinate, then the Joint SAR Team moved to the suspected location at the climbing location to conduct a search and today both were found safe," he said, confiscated by Antara.
