The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning regarding the potential for extreme weather in the form of increasing rainfall by 20 percent during the Christmas 2024 and New Year 2025 periods.

"Extreme weather is predicted to continue until March-April 2025, influenced by the weak La Nina phenomenon which has the potential to increase rainfall by 20 percent," said BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati in her statement, Sunday, December 8.

In addition to La Nina, BMKG also identifies atmospheric dynamics such as Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and the potential cold mission (cold air) from Siberia to western Indonesia which is projected to be active during the Christmas and New Year (Nataru) period.

"These two phenomena can increase the intensity and volume of rainfall in various parts of Indonesia. Even so, the scale and impact still require further monitoring," he added.

Based on a survey by the Ministry of Transportation, it is estimated that around 110.67 million people will travel during the Nataru holiday. Most of them use private vehicles, such as cars and motorbikes, so they are prone to the risk of extreme weather.

BMKG emphasized the importance of anticipatory steps, including careful monitoring of weather conditions. Recent information will be delivered periodically to minimize risks in the field.

Dwikorita explained that BMKG will provide early weather warning every week, with an update three days before up to three hours before the potential for extreme weather.

BMKG also urges the public to take advantage of the Digital Weather for Traffic (DWT) feature available in the BMKG Mobile application.

This feature allows users to access weather information on the homecoming route, starting from early weather warnings, land lane weather conditions, travel route weather, airports, ports, and crossings, as well as flight and wave information.

"By utilizing this service, it is hoped that travelers will be more prepared and safe during the holiday season," he concluded.
