JAKARTA - BUMN Minister Erick Thohir as well as the Honorary Council of the Indonesian Basketball Association (Perbasi) visited the office of DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan today, Thursday, March 4.

Erick's arrival was intended to ask for permission to build the venue for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup at the Gelora Bung Karno complex. This was welcomed by Anies who allowed the construction.

"We at the Provincial Government met with Pak Erick Hhohir and the Secretary General of Perbasi regarding the plan for the 2023 world championships in Jakarta and the 2021 Asian basketball championships. We in Jakarta are grateful, proud, and we will support all preparatory activities so that they can run smoothly and successfully," he said. Anies at the City Hall of DKI, Central Jakarta.

Continuing, the Secretary General of Perbasi, Nirmala Dewi said that he would return to discussing technical licensing and requirements that must be completed by the Governor's team.

"We have received his support for the construction of the FIBA World Cup 2023 venue, especially regarding licensing. Alhamdulillah, the Governor will support us and technically we will discuss it with the Governor's team," said Nirmala.

Nirmala predicts that work on the construction of the FIBA World Cup 2023 venue will last for 16 months and will be completed before the event in 2023.

"As soon as possible, we will discuss with the PUPR ministry in building construction. Today there is a green light from the Governor of DKI. We have begun to dare to coordinate with other stakeholders such as GBK and PUPR," he explained.

For information, the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2023 is the 19th world basketball tournament. The basketball world cup is held in three countries, namely Indonesia (Jakarta), Japan (Okinawa), and the Philippines (Manila).

One of the requirements for FIBA regarding the venue for the match is that it has a capacity of 8,000 people. Currently, Indonesia does not yet have a stadium with such a capacity. Istora Senayan, which is the largest, can only accommodate around 7,200 people.

The plan, the venue will be made like the Staples Center, a multipurpose hall building in Los Angeles, California, United States. In addition to concerts, the building which was inaugurated in 1999 is also used for meetings, exhibitions and sports events such as basketball, boxing and tennis.
