Papuan Traditional Council Talks, Asking The Police To Apply The Law On The Elimination Of Racial Discrimination To Ambroncius

JAKARTA - The Papua Customary Council has spoken out over the alleged case of insulting a Papuan social activist, Natalius Pigai.

Secretary II of the Papuan Customary Council John Gobay said that the perpetrators who were involved in racist acts were not only charged with Law Number 19 of 2016 concerning Electronic Information and Transactions.

However, he was also charged with Law Number 40 of 2008 concerning the Elimination of Racial and Ethnic Discrimination. This aims to create a deterrent effect so that cases do not happen again.

"This incident has happened many times, not only for Natalius Pigai, but there has been no effort to enforce the law that is just", he said.

The Papua Customary Council also asked people in 28 districts and one city not to be provoked by allegations of racism that befell Natalius Pigai.

"Because the police have processed the law regarding the individual involved in the act", he said.

He added that the Papuan Customary Council represented the Natalius Pigai family to the Papua Regional Police's Special Criminal Investigation Directorate on Tuesday, January 26. The goal is to provide a sense of justice for Natalius Pigai and the people of Papua.

Previously reported, a post was uploaded to a social media account named Ambroncius Nababan, who allegedly committed acts of racism against former Komnas HAM member Natalius Pigai.

Ambroncius allegedly issued a racist post on Natalius Pigai on his social media accounts on January 12, 2020, responding to Natalius Pigai's attitude that asked the state to respect the rights of citizens who do not want to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Ambroncius is now a suspect after being reported.
