JAKARTA - South Korean technology manufacturer, LG Innotek has introduced a digital car key module that is claimed to be five times more accurate than the current one.

This technology is claimed to make it easier for drivers to find the location of their parked vehicles, open and lock the doors, and start the car engine using a smartphone, reported Koreatimes.

This digital key module works by locating it in the vehicle, then connecting to the vehicle owner's smartphone mobile device, using wireless data transmission with ultra-wideband technology (UWB).

"The module error range between the smartphone location and the recognition location has been reduced from 50 centimeters to under 10 centimeters", said LG Innotek's Head of Automotive and Electronic Components Business Division Ryu In-soo in a statement.

As the demand for vehicle sharing and rental services that have increased recently, the market for digital car keys is on an increasing growth trajectory.

Market researchers from Strategy Analytics said that the number of vehicles worldwide using digital keys is expected to increase by 360 percent from 6.3 million in 2020 to 28.9 million in 2025.

The existing digital car key module is reported to have a lower level of accuracy in terms of detecting location as well as the security concerns as it is prone to hacking.

"The LG digital car key module is compact and sleek. The module contains about 60 components, including radiofrequency and power blocking elements. With its compact size, this module can be installed freely anywhere inside and outside the vehicle", said LG.

LG Innotek hopes that this digital car key module can be used in a wider application, to support mobility services that continue to grow rapidly.
