JAKARTA - The United States on Friday (2/6) condemned Russia and China for remaining silent amid the growing threat of weapons of mass destruction and North Korea's ballistic missile.

The statement was made at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council (DK PBB) discussing the failure of Pyongyang's military spy satellite launch. The meeting was held at US request.

The meeting came after North Korea on Wednesday (31/5) launched a new type of satellite carrier, Chollima-1. However, the launch ended in failure after the rocket carrying the satellite crashed into the Korean West Sea.

"This launch may have failed, but it violates the Security Council's resolution, increases tensions, and risks disrupting the stability and security situation that is already sensitive in the region and its surroundings," said US deputy envoy to the United Nations Robert Wood.

Wood said the DPRK (The Democratic People's Republic of Korea) has the support of a "loyal defender" at the UN Security Council. Pyongyang, he said, was trying to carry out a unlawful launch.

''With the increasing weapons of mass destruction of the DPRK, the threat of ballistic missiles, and the Council's silent stance, it cannot be believed that these two members of the Council hope that the United States and our allies will do nothing," he said.

He urged UN DK to condemn North Korea's illegal launch and urged Pyongyang not to launch again.

The UN DK has 15 member states, consisting of five permanent members: the US, UK, France, China, Russia, and 10 non-permanent member states.
