West Sulawesi Earthquake Update: 42 People Died, Beware Of Aftershocks

Residents See collapsed houses due to the earthquake in West Sulawesi / Special Region

JAKARTA - The death toll from the earthquake in Mamuju-Majene, West Sulawesi continues to increase. Until 8:00 p.m. WIB, 42 people had died.

"With details of 34 people died in Mamuju Regency and eight people in Majane Regency," said Head of Data, Information and Communication Center for Disaster BNPB, Raditya Jati in Jakarta, Friday, January 15.

Meanwhile, data on damage in Mamuju were reported, including the Mitra Manakarra Hospital which was heavily damaged, the Mamuju Regency Regional Hospital was heavily damaged and damage to the Mamuju Port and the Yellow Bridge which were located in Takandeang, Tapalang Mamuju.

Meanwhile, in Majene Regency 300 damaged houses are still in the process of collecting data until this release is broadcast.

In addition, there are three hospitals that are currently active for emergency services in Mamuju Regency, including Bhayangkara Hospital, West Sulawesi Provincial Regional Hospital and Mamuju Regency Hospital.

Some areas in Mamuju Regency are already electrified and some are still experiencing disturbances. Majene Regency is still in the process of repairing the electric current so that the entire area is still out of order.

The BPBD of Majene Regency, Mamuju Regency and Polewali Mandar Regency is still collecting data and establishing refugee camps and coordinating with the TNI - Polri, Basarnas, volunteers and related agencies in the search for victims affected by the earthquake.

Beware of Aftershocks

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that aftershocks will still occur. For this reason, BNPB urges the public to always be vigilant regarding the potential for aftershocks and to always follow the official information available through the BMKG and the InaRisk portal to find out the potential disaster risks that exist around the residence.

BNPB has distributed assistance in handling the earthquake disaster in Mamuju and Majene Districts, including deploying four helicopters to support emergency handling, 8 sets of isolation tents, 10 sets of refugee tents, 2,004 packages of additional nutritional food, 2,004 packages of ready-to-eat food, 1,002 packages of side dishes pauk, 700 blankets, 5 units of Light Tower, 200 units of Velbed, 500 packages of baby supplies, 500,000 pcs of cloth masks, 700 packs of sago noodles and 30 units of 5 KVA generator sets.
