OJK Plays A Role In Keeping Financial Services Industry Free From Corruption, KPK Warns Not To Allow Banking To Become A 'Service' For Corruption

JAKARTA - Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Firli Bahuri said the Financial Services Authority (OJK) has an important role in keeping the financial services industry healthy and free of corruption.

"The OJK and the KPK share one common goal. OJK has a role in creating a healthy and safe financial services ecosystem, the KPK has a role in eradicating corruption. Each has the same goal to advance Indonesia," said Firli, as quoted by ANTARA from his written statement, Monday, 8 August.

This statement was conveyed by the Chairman of the KPK in his remarks when receiving the OJK audience in order to discuss and strengthen cooperation in eradicating corruption in the financial services industry at the KPK Building.

Firli explained that if the financial services industry is healthy, economic growth can increase as people's income and spending in banking also increase.

"OJK has an important role. Economic growth will not occur if the economic system is not healthy," he said.

Therefore, Firli hopes that the OJK will continue to maintain and maintain the state's financial system so that it grows healthy.

"Never hesitate to communicate and cooperate with the KPK in the interest of preventing and enforcing corruption laws," he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chairperson of the KPK, Nurul Ghufron, emphasized the importance of preventing corruption in financial services because the sector is vulnerable to being a means of committing criminal acts of corruption.

"Financial services are vulnerable as tools for corruption, bribery through financial services, both banking, insurance and others," said Ghufron.

Financial services, he said, are also vulnerable to being used as a place to store the proceeds of corruption crimes, so it is necessary to be careful in carrying out banking business operations so that their services are not used by corrupt actors.

The vulnerability to using financial services as a means of corruption is also coupled with the development of banking digitalization. For example, he describes the practice of digitally transferring funds without naming the sender.

"Don't let those banking services be used by parties who don't have good intentions to commit criminal acts of corruption," said Ghufron.

Chairman of the OJK Board of Commissioners, Mahendra Siregar, welcomed the KPK's recommendation to prevent and eradicate corruption in the financial services industry. OJK will follow up on the recommendations given as concrete steps to realize corruption-free financial services governance.

"This coordination and cooperation is to increase steps and also improvements both within the OJK internal and the entire ecosystem and the financial services sector industry so that it is more integrated, 'good governance', and free from corruption," said Mahendra.

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive of Banking Supervision and member of the OJK Board of Commissioners, Dian Ediana Rae, also said that integrity is a central point in the financial services industry.

“If you look at the examples of other countries, if the integrity is strong, the economic growth will be faster and 'sustainable'. Then looking at the various risks to the financial system, the biggest threat is from economic crimes, including corruption," said Dian.
