KUPANG - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) appealed to residents to be aware of the potential for sea waves with a height of up to four meters in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) for the next two days.

"The potential for waves with a height of 2.5-4 meters to hit around five water points in NTT needs to be watched out for by ship operators and fishermen," said Head of the BMKG Tenau-Kupang Maritime Meteorological Station Syaeful Hadi in a statement received in Kupang, Antara, Thursday, July 28.

He said this was related to the early warning of high waves in the marine waters of NTT which was valid for the next two days (29-30 July 2022).

Syaeful mentioned the five water points, namely the western part of the Sumba Strait, the Savu Sea, the southern Indian Ocean of Sumba-Sabu, the southern Indian Ocean of Kupang-Rote, and the southern waters of Kupang-Rote.

The potential for high waves, he said, poses a high risk to shipping, especially ferries, so ship operators need to be wary of.

In addition, a number of other water points in NTT also have the potential to be hit by waves of up to 2.5 meters over the next two days, namely the eastern part of the Sumba Strait, the Alor-Pantar Strait, and the northern waters of Kupang-Rote.

This wave potential also poses a high risk to the shipping of barges and fishing boats.

The results of the synoptic condition analysis show that the wind direction in the southern part of Indonesia generally moves from east to southeast with wind speeds ranging from 5-25 knots.

Syaeful appealed to ship operators and fishermen in NTT to pay close attention to this potential so as not to threaten the safety of shipping.
