18,737 Madura Cattle Sick With FMD Symptoms

PAMEKASAN - A total of 18,737 head of cattle in Madura Island, East Java were reported to be sick with symptoms such as an outbreak of mouth and nail disease (PMK).

Tens of thousands of cows were reported to be sick, consisting of 5,207 cows in Pamekasan Regency, 5,157 in Bangkalan Regency, 4,630 heads in Sampang Regency and 3,743 heads in Sumenep Regency.

"Therefore, we are intensifying the PMK vaccination to prevent wider transmission," said the Coordinator for the Control of the Mouth and Nail Disease Virus (PMK) at the Food, Agriculture and Livestock Security Service (DKPP) of the Pamekasan Regency Government, Ahmad Fathul Qorib to the media in Pamekasan. The distribution of sick cows with symptoms similar to that of the FMD epidemic spread across all sub-districts in Pamekasan.

Based on the results of laboratory tests, some of them were indeed positive for the FMD outbreak, and some of the sick cows were forcibly slaughtered by their owners, for fear of death.

"Until now, we continue to carry out vaccinations with a target of 100 birds per day, and are carried out from house to house by officers directly," he said, explaining.

Cattle vaccinations were also held in three other districts on Madura Island, namely in Sampang, Bangkalan and Sumenep districts.

In Madura, sick cattle and tested positive for the FMD outbreak for the first time occurred in Bangkalan Regency, after officers conducted animal health checks on hundreds of cows that were about to be sent outside Madura Island.

A total of five cows tested positive for the FMD outbreak, and the sick cows were purchased at the Keppo Cattle Market, the largest cattle market in Madura, located in Polagan Village, Galis District, Pamekasan.
