BMKG Asks NTT Residents Not To Be Provoked By Tsunami Earthquake Issues

KUPANG - Head of the Kupang Geophysics Station, Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Margiono, appealed to the people of East Nusa Tenggara not to be provoked by information circulating about rumors that said there would be an earthquake and tsunami in the NTT region.

"People remain calm and don't be provoked by the issue of the earthquake and tsunami with a height of more than 3 meters in NTT," he said in a press release quoted by Antara, Thursday, May 19.

He said this was in response to the emergence of anxiety among coastal communities in NTT about information about an earthquake with the potential to cause a tsunami with a height of more than 3 meters.

Margiono said NTT as an area that is active in earthquakes has the potential for earthquakes to occur at any time and in various strengths.

However, until now there is no technology that can predict earthquakes with precision and accuracy regarding when, where, and at what strength.

"Therefore, BMKG has never issued earthquake prediction information," he said.

Margiono explained based on expert studies that the southern megathrust zone of NTT has the potential for an earthquake with a maximum magnitude of 8.5.

However, this is a potential not a prediction so no one knows when it will happen.

He invited various parties to carry out structural and non-structural mitigation by building buildings that are safe from earthquakes, arranging coastal spaces that are safe from tsunamis.

In addition, it also educates the public in saving themselves from the dangers of earthquakes and tsunamis.

Margiono reminded the public to remain calm and not be provoked by information that predicts an earthquake and tsunami.
