JAKARTA - Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian said the provision of sports facilities would become a mandatory program for regional heads.

"In the meeting, the Vice President suggested that it be a mandatory program. With a mandatory program, the program will automatically make a budget, and that will include the construction of sports facilities and infrastructure, sports coaching in schools, making sports events and others," Tito said at the Vice Presidential Palace in Jakarta, reported by Antara, Thursday, May 12.

The Minister of Home Affairs conveyed this after attending the National Sports Design Implementation Meeting (DBON) chaired by Vice President Ma'ruf Amin.

"Sport is currently one of 18 optional matters. So because it is not mandatory, we really depend on the passion of the respective regional heads. The regional head likes sports, so he develops sports, so the priority programs are prioritized, the budget becomes big , infrastructure and facilities are built," he said.

However, he said, with the diverse character of Indonesian society, culture and geography, superior sports programs must be in accordance with the social and cultural character of the community.

"For example, the mountainous areas in Papua, they have genes that were formed thousands of years because of altitude, thin air, thin oxygen, thicker heart. Well actually we have that potential. Paragliding, for example, or water areas focus on water sports, sea , diving, water sports, while in urban areas, such as Jakarta, for example, agility sports," said Tito.

"But it doesn't lock them in that branch alone, if they want to develop other branches, they can be developed. Thus, the budget program that is required by the regions can automatically produce athletes who can compete at the national and international levels," said Tito.

Based on Presidential Decree No. 86 of 2021 concerning DBON, Vice President Ma'ruf Amin is the Chair of the Coordination Team for the National Sports Design Center (DBON).

DBON is a master plan that contains the direction of national sports coaching and development policies that are carried out in an effective, efficient, superior, measurable, systematic, accountable and sustainable manner in the scope of sports education, recreational sports, sports achievements and the sports industry.

DBON itself includes recreational sports, educational sports, achievement sports and the sports industry.
