DENPASAR - Denpasar Police Chief Kombes Jansen Avitus Panjaitan said British foreigner (WNA) Harper Matthew (48) died of suicide allegedly due to depression because he no longer worked as a chef or cook at the Karma Hotel Bali.

"Depression is thought to be because he dropped out (of work) and there is no work anymore. He's a chef at Hotel Karma because of the pandemic, so he doesn't work anymore, maybe that's one of the triggers for depression," said Jansen at the Denpasar Police Headquarters, Bali, Wednesday, January 19.

The victim is known to have been in Bali for almost 2 years and worked as a chef. Police say the victim committed suicide using a kitchen knife.

"Use a kitchen knife or a knife found at the TKP (the crime scene). So we have carried out a suitable Labfor examination and also with the results of the autopsy the stab wound was the same and the blood was found to be the same," added the Denpasar Police Chief.

The police examined 7 witnesses including Dr Ida Bagus Putu Alit, a forensic expert at Sanglah Central General Hospital (RSUP), Denpasar. The girlfriend of the victim, Emmy, Martha Pakpahan, was also questioned, who knew the victim had committed suicide.

Meanwhile, for the evidence found, namely knives, Vodka liquor, CCTV footage, cellphone video recordings, a number of antidepressant drugs.

Meanwhile, the autopsy found bruises on the lower back, stiffness in the jaw and stab wounds.

"The reason for the death of the victim by suicide is based on the location of the wound on the part of the body that was reached by the victim.

The image of the wound in the form of a slash that shows doubt, the clothes that cover the stab wound do not tear, which indicates that the clothes were removed when the stab wound occurred," said Kombes Jansen.

Meanwhile, the cause of bruising is blunt force, which is estimated to occur 1 to 3 days before death.

"The cause of the victim's death was a stab wound to the lower right side of the groin that hit a large blood vessel or artery, which was carried out by the victim himself," said Denpasar Police Chief.
