Tok! Plenary Meeting Approves TPKS Bill As DPR Initiative

JAKARTA - The plenary session of the Indonesian House of Representatives ratified the official Draft Law on the Crime of Sexual Violence (RUU TPKS) as a bill proposed by the DPR. Previously, this policy was discussed intensively only in the Legislative Body of the DPR.

"Now we ask the esteemed council whether the proposed bill on the initiative of the DPR RI on Sexual Violence can be approved as a bill proposed by the DPR RI," said DPR Speaker Puan Maharani in a DPR plenary meeting, Tuesday, January 18, 2022.

"Agreed," said Puan again, tapping the hammer in agreement.

Furthermore, said Puan, the DPR is waiting for the president's letter to appoint a government representative to discuss this bill with the DPR.

"This is also a list of inventory problems from the government," he continued.

All factions agreed to the ratification along with a number of notes. For example, the Gerindra Party faction wants this policy to later have a prevention paradigm—not just to focus on dealing with sexual violence.

Meanwhile, the PDIP faction wants this bill to include the issue of sexual deviance.

It is known, the discussion of this bill has been going on in the DPR since at least 2016 and only started discussing incentives in the last year. Its name has also changed from the Draft Law on the Elimination of Sexual Violence to the Bill on Criminal Acts of Sexual Violence.
