2,351 Wives In Aceh Sued For Divorce

JAKARTA - From January to June 2020, there were 3,220 cases of divorce filed by Acehnese citizens to the Aceh Sharia Court. The lawsuit was dominated by the wife who asked for divorce.

Of the 3,220 divorce cases, 2,351 were lawsuits filed by wives against their husbands. Meanwhile, the cases for divorce divorce or divorce filed by the husband were only 869 cases.

"One of the reasons for many cases of divorce by wives against husbands is economic factors and the incompatibility between the two has resulted in divorce," said the head of public relations for the Aceh Sharia Court, M. Anshary.

According to him, apart from economic factors, there are factors leaving one partner, for example, her husband works abroad, it turns out that her husband remarried there and did not provide for his wife.

He added that during the pandemic period, for case handling, several districts / cities in Aceh held virtual trials in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

"Some have held face-to-face hearings while still implementing health protocols in an effort to cut the chain of spread of the corona," he said.

Apart from the divorce rate, he said, other cases received by the Sharia Court in 23 regencies / cities, such as marriage ceremonies were also quite high, namely 988 cases followed by dispensation of marriage, namely 410 cases.

"The total number of civil cases we have received is around 5,251 cases and about 4,671 cases have been decided," he said.
