This Is The Reason For The Appointment Of The Genesis G80 Electric Car To Become The Official VIP Car At The G20 Bali Summit

JAKARTA – In the framework of the G20 Summit which will be held in Bali in 2022, the Indonesian government has determined an electric car made by Hyundai to be an official VIP vehicle. The car is called the Genesis Electrified G80.

This is part of the government's appreciation of Hyundai for investing in the country in the electric vehicle ecosystem. Genesis is Hyundai's premium brand that was born in 2015. At first, Genesis was Hyundai's most luxurious sedan brand, but the company decided to separate the brand.

The appointment was clarified by the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan. He explained that the selection of the Genesis Electrified G80 as the official electric car at the Bali G20 Summit was because the South Korean manufacturer had invested in the development of electric vehicles in Indonesia.

"The government will use battery-based vehicles that have invested in Indonesia as official vehicles for the G20," Luhut explained at The Future Electric Vehicle Ecosystem for Indonesia, as quoted from Antara on Monday, October 25, 2021.

Currently, Hyundai is the closest automotive manufacturer to the government in an effort to develop pure electric cars in the country. Until now, Hyundai is committed to disbursing investment funds worth US$ 2.55 billion or around Rp. 21.8 trillion until 2030. Some of the funds are used to establish a car assembly plant in the Bekasi area.

The new Hyundai factory will produce the first Creta car at the end of 2021. Then in March 2022 it is scheduled to produce its first electric car.

For information, Hyundai has sold the Ioniq EV and Kona EV electric cars. However, the two brands are not designed domestically but are assembled in their home country, South Korea. The Ioniq EV electric car has been used as an official car for ministries and local governments.

Not only Hyundai, LG also invested US$1.1 billion (equivalent to Rp15.5 trillion) to set up a battery factory in Karawang. President Joko Widodo claims that this is the first battery factory in Southeast Asia.

The battery factory is scheduled to be completed in 2023. Then in the following year, battery cells will soon be produced to supply components for Hyundai and Kia electric cars that are assembled using the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) platform.

In addition to the two companies, four Japanese car manufacturers such as Toyota, Mitsubishi, Honda, and Suzuki have expressed their commitment to the development of hybrid cars. Toyota invested IDR 28.3 trillion, Mitsubishi IDR 11.2 trillion, Honda IDR 5.2 trillion, and Suzuki IDR 1.2 trillion.

Not only automotive manufacturers from Korea and Japan, the Chinese car manufacturer Wuling reportedly also enlivened the electric car competition in Indonesia. Currently, Wuling is preparing to produce electric cars for the Indonesian market.
