The First Week In October, Floods Happened 15 Times In Indonesia

JAKARTA - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) noted that floods have occurred 15 times, starting in the first week of October 2021, from October 1 to 8.

"The BNPB data for the flood disaster for the period 1 to 8 October 2021 recorded 15 incidents. Most of the floods were located in Kalimantan, such as in West Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan and East Kalimantan," said Plt. Head of BNPB Disaster Data and Communication Center Abdul Muhari in his statement, Wednesday, October 13.

During this period, it was recorded that 4 residents died and 20 others were injured due to the flash flood that occurred in the Luwu area, South Sulawesi Province on October 3.

"While the damage to houses during this period, BNPB recorded 12 units of damaged houses and 6 units of public facilities," said Abdul Muhari.

Based on an analysis compiled by BMKG, the Ministry of PUPR, and the Geospatial Information Agency, BNPB noted a number of areas with high potential for flooding.

These areas are located in Aceh (Aceh Singkil, Aceh Tamiang and Gayo Lues), West Sumatra (Langkat and Mandailing Natal), Jambi (Kerinci and Sungai Penuh City), Bengkulu (South Bengkulu, Central Bengkulu, North Bengkulu, Kaur, Lebong and Seluma Then South Sumatra (Lahat, Ogan Komering Ulu), Lampung (West Coast), Central Sulawesi (Sigi), West Papua (Sorong and Teluk Bintuni) and Papua (Deiyai, Dogiyai, Jayawijaya, Central Membramo, Mimika, Nabire, Paniai and Yalimo).

Responding to the rainy season this month, Abdul Muhari asked the local government to increase preparedness against hydrometeorological hazards. Not only floods, but also other threats such as flash floods and landslides.

Abdul Muhari also asked the Provincial Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) throughout Indonesia to instruct BPBDs at the district and city levels in carrying out several preparedness efforts.
