Rainfall Exceeds Normal Conditions, Bandung Residents Please Beware Of Floods And Landslides

BANDUNG - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of the Bandung Geophysics Station asked the people in Greater Bandung to be aware of landslides that could potentially occur during the rainy season.

Head of BMKG Bandung Teguh Rahayu said the rainy season in Greater Bandung is predicted to occur in mid-October 2021. The increase in rainfall is predicted to reach 15-60 percent higher than normal conditions.

"With an 80-85 percent chance of rain, such conditions will also increase the chance of hydrometeorological disasters, such as floods and landslides in areas," he said in Bandung, Antara, Wednesday, October 13.

According to him, the Greater Bandung area is geographically surrounded by many mountains and hills with an elevation of more than 2,000 meters above sea level.

This condition, he said, caused the Greater Bandung area to have the potential for hydrometeorological disasters related to topography, such as floods and landslides.

"Besides that, there are other potential disasters, such as hail and strong winds or tornadoes," he said.

With this potential, people in Greater Bandung, especially those living in hilly areas or the Citarum Watershed (DAS), should increase their vigilance ahead of the rainy season.

"The public is also expected not to believe in hoaxes and always seek official disaster information issued from parties directly related to disaster events," he said.
