Elon Musk Says Jeff Bezos' Rockets: If You Just Go To Suborbital, Your Rocket Can Be Shorter
JAKARTA – Elon Musk, the boss of SpaceX and Tesla, is an eccentric figure. Musk recently mocked his rival Jeff Bezos by saying that the Blue Origin rocket should be shorter if it could only reach suborbitals.
Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are the two richest people in the world who often clash. Previously, NASA chose to team up with Musk's rocket company, SpaceX, on a moon landing mission. Knowing this, Bezos did not stand still. He appealed to the court and questioned why NASA chose SpaceX over his rocket company, Blue Origin.
In addition, Musk and Bezos also often compete on space projects. Some time ago Bezos managed to fly into space on a Blue Origin New Shepard rocket. A number of people responded to the shape of the rocket like the male genitalia. When Elon Musk was asked about the shape of the New Shepard rocket, he simply said: "I think it (the New Shepard rocket) could be a different shape."
"If you just go to the suborbital, your rocket will be shorter," Musk quipped, followed by laughter from the crowd.
For information, the suborbital is an imaginary line of Karman which is located 62 miles above sea level. The Karman imaginary line is often referred to as the boundary between Earth's atmosphere and space.
Elon Musk made a satire against Blue Origin, which is predicted to be a space tourism vehicle, but can only fly to suborbitals and not actually fly into space. New Shepard flies at an altitude of 100 km above Earth. The altitude has been agreed internationally as the space boundary but is still far from Earth's orbit, the point that Elon Musk's rocket company, SpaceX, usually reaches.
Through his Twitter account, Elon Musk threw a meme mocking Jeff Bezos. The meme is taken from footage from the Star Wars film which was later edited with the faces of Bezos and Musk. The meme means Musk doubts Bezos' statement that he will fly into space. Musk also added the words "Haha" in the meme.
Musk is known as a controversial figure and often does nosy things such as mocking Bezos' space project. Musk also once called the Blue Origin rocket a copycat. It didn't stop there, the Tesla boss also mocked another Blue Origin rocket, the Lunar Lander as "Blue Balls". The two richest people on Earth are known to have frequent disagreements.
When Blue Origin sued NASA over the Moon landing mission contract with SpaceX. Asked about the lawsuit filed by Bezos, Elon Musk responded casually. "I think he (Bezos) would rather use his energy to fly into orbit than take care of a lawsuit," Musk said as quoted by Business Insider.
"You can't sue people to go to the Moon, no matter how great your lawyer is," Musk joked.
