Taking Legal Path, Families Of Tangerang Class 1 Prison Fire Victims Form Coalition Through LBH
JAKARTA - A number of families of victims of the Tangerang Class 1 prison fire formed a coalition with the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH), LBH Masyarakat and Imparsial.
This coalition was formed as legal assistance to victims of the Tangerang Class 1 prison fire.
LBH Jakarta's public attorney, Oky Wiratama, said the coalition would sue on the grounds of unlawful acts committed by the government.
"There is no SOP related to security when there is a fire in the prison," he said when contacted by reporters, Thursday, September 30.
"Now there are six heirs who have signed the power of attorney to us," he added.
In addition to the SOPs, Oky also highlighted the lack of skills of the Tangerang Class 1 prison fire management in dealing with the bloody incident that killed 49 inmates.
"We have witnesses who are wardens in prisons who claim that they are not provided with training, if there is a fire they have to do anything. Then regarding disaster mitigation in the event of a fire, what things are done, there is nothing yet," he said.
The coalition also paid attention to the excess capacity that occurred in the Class 1 Tangerang prison. He considered, the majority of the victims who died were in a very crowded and crowded hall.
From the results of the investigation that has been carried out, LBH Jakarta claimed to have a video recording the seconds before the fire burned block C2.
In the video, continued Oky, the inmates who were screaming and panicking couldn't make an effort to save themselves because of the locked cell condition.
"Even though the fire is still about 20 meters away, there can still be time to save yourself. Now, I think this is where the government's failure lies," said Oky.
Until now, LBH Jakarta is still opening a complaint post for families of victims of the Tangerang Class 1 prison fire who want to take legal action.
