West Java Wins 2 Gold In Papua PON Rowing Branch Number
JAKARTA - The West Java contingent dominated the second day of the 2021 Papua National Sports Week (PON) rowing competition by winning two of the four gold medals up for grabs on Tuesday.
The first gold was donated by Andri Agus Mulyana and Indra Hidayat in the men's 1000 meter kayak event with a time of 3 minutes 36.741 seconds.
In the next final, Muhammad Yunus and Roby Kuswandi added another piece after finishing the fastest in the men's second 1000 meters canoe final with a time of 4 minutes 02.986 seconds.
Yunus, who is also a member of the Indonesian rowing national team, admitted that he was speechless because he was able to donate gold again to his contingent.
“I am really speechless because this is my last PON. Three times in a row I was able to donate a silver medal, then gold and then gold. I'm very proud," said Yunus after the race, reported by Antara.
"Hopefully, I hope to continue to join the national team," he added.
The West Java contingent previously also won one silver from the men's 1000 meters canoe number one through Yuda Firmansyah who finished second with a time of 4 minutes 20.960 seconds.
While the gold medal was won by Muh.Burhan from Southeast Sulawesi with a time of 4 minutes 18.165 seconds. Zubakri from Jambi won the bronze medal with a time of 4 minutes 22.310 seconds.
Meanwhile, in one other number, namely the men's 1000 meters, West Java was only able to finish fourth. Riau won the gold medal for this number, Jambi won the silver, while the Jakarta contingent won bronze.
Rowing is one of the Papuan PON sports which was played earlier on September 27 before the opening ceremony of the quadrennial sporting event which was held on Saturday this week.
The rowing branch will be participated by 22 provinces and will compete for 40 gold medals consisting of 15 gold from rowing, 16 canoeing, and nine from traditional boat race (TBR).
