Snapchat Brings Lens Feature Learn Sign Language

JAKARTA - Snapchat wants to encourage its users to use sign language in its application. The company just launched a special lens feature that teaches users how to spell fingers in American Sign Language (ASL)

The company explains that it created lenses that utilize Augmented Reality (AR) in partnership with SignAll, a startup dedicated to creating technology for the deaf.

After launching its own Ace ASL mobile app for Android and iOS in early 2021, the company partnered with Snap in September to bring these ASL lenses to life.

"This AR lens will inspire Snapchatters to spell their name with their fingers, as well as other common words like love, hug, and smile," Snapchat said in an official statement quoted from Screenrant, Tuesday, September 22.

There are three features of ASL lenses for users to choose from and all of them can be accessed by scanning a code within the Snapchat app. The first ASL lenses taught users how to spell everyday words like love, smile, hug and more.

The second lens takes someone's Snapchat username and teaches them how to spell it. Finally, a third lens guides people through their fingers to spell the alphabet. Users can record videos and share them with friends.

The lens, which was developed with the help of Snap's deaf employees, also aims to provide a more inclusive and idealized environment, making more content creators consider deaf users when they create their content.

In fact, this Snapchat idea is a fantastic way for more people to dive into the world of American Sign Language. Of course this tool is useful for someone who has a deaf family member, or wants to get to know the language better, having a basic understanding of ASL is a great tool for anyone.

How to use it is also quite easy besides scanning the barcode, you just have to open the application, tap the search icon in the upper left corner, and search for fingerspell. Good luck!
