Unair Professor JE Sahetapy Passes Away, Many People Convey Condolences
JAKARTA - Universitas Airlangga announces the sad news of the death of Prof. Dr. Jacob Elfinus Sahetapy or commonly called JE Sahetapy.
“Rest in Peace 6 June 1932 - 21 September 2021 Prof.Dr. JESahetapy, SH, MA (Professor Emiritus of Criminal Law and Criminology of FH UNAIR & Dean of FH UNAIR Period 1979-1985)," said the statement on FH Universitas Airlangga's Instagram, quoted by VOI.
The legal expert and Professor of Universitas Airlangga (Unair) breathed his last this morning at 06.57 WIB, at the age of 89 years.
It is planned that the late man who was born on June 6, 1932 will be buried in the Grand Heaven funeral home.
In his academic record, after graduating from high school in Surabaya, JE Sahetatapy continued his studies at the Faculty of Law, Universitas Airlangga.
He then continued his studies at the University of Utah, United States in 1962. After returning from college in Uncle Sam's country, he was accused of being a CIA spy and was only able to start teaching in 1979.
Not only teaching at Airlangga University, he also has an academic career at Diponegoro University and University of Indonesia.
In his existence, JE Sahetapy was listed as Chancellor of Petra Christian University Surabaya for the period 1966-1969 and was the Chairman of the Indonesian Law Commission for the period 2000-2014. He also briefly entered politics and became a member of the DPR from the PDI-P faction in the 1999-2004 period.
In addition, he has held several bureaucratic positions, namely Member of the BP MPR RI, Member of the Ad Hoc Committee I (Amendment to the 1945 Constitution) of the MPR RI, and Member of the Legislative Sub-Commission of the DPR.
Condolences for the death of the criminal law expert also poured in, including public figures such as Presidential Spokesman Fadjroel Rachman.
"Goodbye Prof. JE Sahetapy HEART OF CONSCIENCE LAW in Indonesia ~ #BungFADJROEL @JubirPresidenRI," he tweeted via the Twitter account @fadjroel.
Followed by the Presidential Staff Office (KSP) through its official Twitter account @KSPgoid.
"My deepest condolences on the death of Prof. Dr. JE Sahetapy, SH, MA," wrote KSP.
Meanwhile, economic expert Rizal Ramli also via his Twitter account also expressed his condolences for the death of the scientist.
"My deepest condolences for the loss of my friend, man of integrity, Prof. JE Sahetapy. Comrade in arms against the authoritarian system. May He Rest in Peace," tweeted Rizal Ramli via Twitter account @RamliRizal.
There is also the Deputy Secretary General of the Democratic Party DPP, Jansen Sitindaon. He also shared the sad news through his Twitter account, @jansen_jsp.
According to Jansen, JE Sahetapy is a person who has extraordinary integrity and knowledge. And having a dissertation related to the death penalty is a matter of pride for people who have studied at FH Unair.
"Professor JE Sahetapy has passed away this morning at the age of 89 years. A professor with a special place in the world of Indonesian law, with extraordinary integrity and knowledge. His dissertation on the "death penalty" was a champion in his time. His name has become the pride of us having studied at FH Unair," wrote Jansen.
