Surabaya DPRD Highlights Hotels And Restaurants Disposing Of Hazardous And Toxic Waste At TPS
SURABAYA - The Surabaya City DPRD highlighted a number of hotels and restaurants suspected of disposing of B3 waste (toxic and hazardous materials) in the temporary dump site (TPS) Jalan Kayon.
"We are following up on reports from residents because the environment is polluted by hotel and restaurant waste," said Chairman of Commission C for the Development of the Surabaya DPRD, Baktiono, when he summoned the hotel for questioning in the Commission C room, quoted by Antara, Monday, September 20.
There were also hotels that attended the invitation of Commission C, namely Dafam Hotel, Sheraton, JW Marriot, Hotel Bumi, Windham Hotel. They were asked to be present to provide information regarding how the hotel disposes of its waste.
According to Baktiono, the majority of hotels in Surabaya in managing their waste disposal cooperate with vendors, or third parties, so the hotel does not know anything about disposing of their waste.
For that, he continued, his party will immediately call the vendor or third party, to clarify the matter of disposing of waste or liquid waste to the TPS on Jl. Kayoon.
Baktiono explained, from the results of the confession by the TPS guards in Kayoon, that the hotel waste disposed of to the TPS was food waste, used oil, which caused an unpleasant odor in the environment around Kayoon.
"We have also checked the TPS location in Kayoon," he said.
For this reason, he said, his party asked the hotel to conduct a thorough internal evaluation of vendors regarding disposing of hotel waste. Commission C also asked the vendor to make repairs either with hotels, restaurants, malls that throw garbage into the TPS.
According to Regional Regulation Number 5 of 2014, it is clear that TPS is only for household waste, while for hotel, restaurant and mall waste, even markets must provide IPAL or Water and Waste Management Installations.
"Waste must be separated into dry, wet, and B3 waste. After that, where should it be disposed? Hotel and restaurant waste should be disposed of at the TPA (final disposal site) not to the TPS," he said.
Meanwhile, a representative from the Harris Hotel, Gubeng Iwan, said that so far, hotel waste has been sorted into dry and wet waste. Meanwhile, B3 waste, he continued, is in the hotel basement.
"We have collaborated with vendors for waste disposal. So we don't know if hotel waste is dumped into a TPS on Jl. Kayoon," said Iwan.
